Whether we order from a coffee shop or hit the brew button on our machines at home, we give little thought to the machine responsible for turning ground coffee into a drinkable beverage. Different Types of Coffee Machines

Though the machines and devices we use at home are different from those found in coffee shops or restaurants, they all get the job done through a similar process. There are four primary types of commercial coffee machines:

  • Manual. Manual coffee makers have become relatively rare in business settings, as they require significant skill to produce a good cup of coffee. However, some coffee shops still enjoy the novelty of fully manual brewing.
  • Semi-automatic. Semi-automatic coffee machines often require the skilled hand of a barista to operate successfully and are quite common in cafes around the world. The device controls the pressure, but water flow and other tasks still require manual operation.
  • Automatic. Automatic industrial coffee machines are standard in most restaurants, as they allow servers and staff to insert grounds and press a button to produce coffee while they go about other tasks.
  • Super-automatic. Super-automatic commercial coffee machines won’t produce the same quality coffee as a skilled barista. Still, they do provide the same cup every time, which makes them ideal for franchises and other settings where consistency is highly valued.

How Do Commercial Coffee Makers Work?

All commercial coffee machines facilitate the same thing: percolation. Boiled water passes through the coffee grounds, then through a filter into the cup.

Within the machine, a heating element boils the water. As pressure builds, the water moves through a small pipe into the container with the coffee grounds. The water runs slowly through the grounds, taking that delicious coffee flavor with it as it drips into your cup. The percolation process is pre-programmed for the perfect timing to make the ideal pot of coffee. There are a lot of moving parts that make it all happen, including time delay relays.

Why Are Time-Delay Relays So Important for Commercial Coffee Dispensing?

Time-delay relays are essential in commercial coffee makers, as well as a variety of other dispensing equipment, conveyor belts, vehicles, furnace fans, warning systems, and more. They allow for different parts of a process to start or stop at different times, which can be essential for proper production. Time-delay relays also allow for more efficient operation by reducing the amount of energy the machine needs to use.

In a coffee machine, the relay device tells the machine when to stop running, allowing a barista or server to make a small, medium, or large cup of coffee without watching the machine the entire time. Though there are other types of time-delay relays, these on- and off-delay timers are the most widely used as a coffee maker relay.
